A Cinnamon Roll Recipe and a Birthday Breakfast

Birthday Cinnamon Roll Rszd 500x333

This past week we celebrated a birthday in our house.  It has become a tradition in our home to have homemade cinnamon rolls for breakfast on each person’s birthday.  Their cinnamon roll comes complete with a candle to blow out and presents to open.  There are usually decorations donning the dining room, which may include, balloons, hats and noise makers.  Sometimes there are even games involved in our morning celebration.

These birthday breakfasts hold many fond memories for us.  The kids always look forward to having cinnamon rolls on their special day.  So, today we wanted to share our cinnamon roll recipe. This is a pretty fool proof method, there have been times I have started making them too late to let them rise and they still end up rising when they bake. :)

Cinnamon Roll Recipe

6 cups all- purpose flour                                          Filling:
1 T. active dry yeast                                                 2 tsp. cinnamon
1 c. water, warmed                                                  2 c. brown sugar
1 c. milk, warmed                                                    1/2 c. butter, melted
1/2 c. butter, melted
1 c. sugar                                                                Icing:
1 tsp. salt                                                                 2 c. powder sugar
2 eggs                                                                     2 T. milk

In a glass bowl, stir together flour and yeast.  Add the water, milk, butter, sugar, salt and eggs, stir until combined.  Turn onto a lightly floured surface and knead.  Split dough in half.  Stir together the ingredients for the filling.  Grease a 11 x 17 pan.  Roll out one of the halves of dough to about 1/4″ thick.  Spread 1/2 of the filling on the rolled out dough, then roll  the dough up lengthwise.  Cut with a sharp knife the width you would like.  I cut 6-7 rolls out of each half.  Place the rolls in the pan, repeat with the second half of dough.  Cover with a towel and let rise about a 1/2 hour in a warm place.  Bake at 350 for about 25 minutes or until lightly browned.  Combine the powder sugar and milk for icing and drizzle on the rolls after they come out of the oven.

This recipe makes about 24 rolls, you can easily cut the recipe in half if you don’t need that many.

How do you celebrate birthdays?  Do you have a special meal or dish you make?  I’d love for you to share about it in the comments.

  1. Thanks for sharing your recipe. It looks great! Love the photo!

I usually ask each child what they’d like for their birthday meals and if possible, I will do something special for each meal. It varies from each child, but a favorite to ask for is usually homemade pizza or sausage/gravy biscuits. At breakfast the child usually opens the cards they’ve received in the mail. Our traditions have varied from year to year depending upon where we are (at home or at grandparents home) and what the child is getting as to when they open their presents.

When the kids were younger, I kept up with a scrapbooking album that was just for their birthdays only. We always have fun looking through the albums to see how they’ve changed each year. One day, I hope to get caught up on their albums and get all the pages filled in. Thanks for sharing your traditions.

  2. I usually let the children pick what they want for each meal too. I think I did scrapbooks for the first two children, but haven’t kept up since, I wish I could, they are so neat. I hope to get caught up one day too. I have a cousin who is 70, she is just now scrapbooking her pics, that’s probably when I will get to mine too. :)

    • Yes, I figured that it will be a long time from now for me as well, but I think I at least have a little something for each of them in case I don’t. What is nice is the capabilities online now that you can do, but I still hope to do handmade ones still one day. We can both look forward to that!!!

  3. We let the birthday kid pick their favorite meal and let them pick the theme of their birthday cake. Sometimes it’s a homemade cake and sometimes I’m just lazy and buy one from the store (and add decor to the top!) The bigger kids get bigger parties, with guests and music and cookouts, while the little kids get a simpler party. It totally doesn’t make sense to me to throw a huge party for a toddler, who will just have a meltdown and then not remember it anyway!

    • I never thought of parties that way, but you are right, the toddlers can’t appreciate it as much as the bigger kids. Great idea to pick a cake up at the store and add your own decor to the top, I like the bakery icing better anyway. :) Thanks for stopping by!
