Praying For Our Children

TFWRC Blog Post Image Pray
Jim posted a new article, “Praying For Our Children”, at The Family Worship Resource Center blog.  Here’s a quote from the article:

It is good for me to be reminded that in God’s economy, while I am called to spiritually labor in the fields of my children’s lives, it is God who I must depend upon to ultimately bring the increase.

You can check out the entire article, if you would like, at the TFWRC blog.

Film Making

Jim and the boys have had a desire and burden to make family friendly films.  They have spent the last couple of years making short films to learn the craft of film making.  They created a short-film company called Two22Creative under which their short films are made.

Jim and Adin are currently working on their first script for a feature film.  It is coming together really well. We are very excited about it.

You can check out one of their short films, A Fish Tale, above.  And you can check out all of their films, if you would like, at their Two22Creative Facebook page by clicking: here

Traditions

Crayon Christmas Ornaments 2 750x500

Everyone at our house is excited about Christmas coming!  One of the things the kids enjoy most are the traditions we have created over the years.  Some of the traditions have been intentional, and some have just happened by being requested each year, but they all lend to the excitement and joy of the season, which is our purpose in them, to rejoice in the celebration of God sending His Son to earth to die for us, so we can have salvation.

Years ago I read Noel Piper’s book Treasuring God In Our Traditions.   In the book she explains the why of traditions, pointing out that Moses, in Exodus 12:26-27, sets an example for us of the importance of celebrating traditions in order to teach our children what God has done for us.  Noel says, “We and our children need this yearly repetition to impress us with the weight of what God has done.”  In addition to giving reasons why we should have traditions, Noel shares some great ideas for creating those traditions.  It is a short, easy read, and well worth your time.

I thought I would share some of our traditions we do during the Christmas season as well as new things we are trying this year.

TRADITIONS

Making Christmas cookies – we have searched high and low for a good sugar cookie recipe and this is our favorite

Shepherd’s Bags – an idea we got from Noel’s book which is a free pdf download, or you can purchase the actual book at Amazon.

Word Puzzles – every year our kids like to see how many words they can make out of the word Christmas and other holiday words.  Jammerill at Free Homeschool Deals has a free downloadable Christmas spelling activity that uses this same idea.

NEW THINGS:

Salt Dough Ornaments – the kids and I are planning on making salt dough ornaments, but I saw this fun idea on Kids Activities Blog for a salt dough bracelet, which I think we will have to try soon too. :)

Advent Devotional –  Jim is leading us through John Pipers new Advent devotional, The Dawning of Indestructible Joy, in our times of family worship this Christmas season.  A FREE .pdf version of the devotional is available at Desiring God, they also have a link there to purchase a copy of the book, if you would desire.

Crayon Ornaments – this year we made the ornaments pictured at the beginning of this post.  It was a lot of fun to do and they look beautiful on our Christmas tree.  You can find the instructions to make them at Meet The Dubiens.

What are some of your Christmas traditions?  We would love to hear about them in the comment section.

Bookstore Visits

Bookstore 1

Jim and some of the kids had a product table at a couple of the local bookstores recently and they performed some of the songs live from the Scripture Memory Songs CDs in the cafe at one of the stores.  It was a great time visiting with people and presenting some of the music.

Three Ingredient Pumpkin Spice Muffins

Pumpkin Spice Cake Muffins
Do you have an extra can of pumpkin puree left over from Thanksgiving?  If so, you might want to try this yummy, and really simple muffin recipe.

Jim’s mom was out for a visit last month.  She travels down from New England every fall.  It is a highlight of our year.  In addition to just the joy of getting to spend time with her, she spoils us with her yummy cooking.  This year she made a new muffin recipe for us while she was here.  We weren’t surprised that they were delicious, but we were surprised when she told us the recipe only calls for three ingredients.   These muffins are the perfect thing for breakfast on a crisp fall or winter morning.

Pumpkin Spice Muffins
1 Spice Cake Mix
1 15 oz. can of 100% Pure Pumpkin Puree
Brown Sugar

Mix the can of pumpkin puree and the cake mix together (that’s it!) and spoon into greased muffin tins. Sprinkle brown sugar on top of the batter in the tins.  Bake at 400 degrees for about 20 minutes.  Cool a bit – serve warm.  Enjoy!

“God Created” Music Video

Hello!  Here is a new Scripture Memory Kids video for the song God Created from the Scripture Memory Songs 2 CD.  Featuring lots of live animals, and foam-board animals, it was a lot of fun to make.  Hope you enjoy!
